FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER
Dear friends and families,
We’re in the home stretch! With a little more than three weeks left in 2020, I’m sure like many of you, I can’t wait to rip out (and rip up) this calendar and turn to a new year, with renewed hope for a brighter future. To see the first steps of a vaccine coming to the public was remarkable yesterday. Let us never forget the power of ingenuity, science and hope.
My grateful thanks on behalf of the JAZZ HOUSE to the many of you who donated on Giving Tuesday, a global generosity movement that unleashes the power of the people and organizations to transform the communities and the world. A special shout out to our friend and long-time board member, Neal Lazar who stepped up with a generous matching gift.
This week marks the beginning of our Winter Trimester II classes. While the doors to the JAZZ HOUSE are still virtual, our students keep swinging! We would like to welcome back all our students and faculty, as well as give a big shout out to our newcomers, especially to teaching artists, ALVESTER GARNETT and MANUEL VALERA. JAZZ HOUSE goes global! We have 12 new students this trimester including several from Peru and the Dominican Republic. For the very first time, we will conduct an ensemble class entirely in Spanish, led by ABEL MIRELES! Thank you to MARKUS GOTTSCHLICH and his team for putting a great program together.
Tonight! CHRISTIAN McBRIDE kicks off our [iNSIDE] JAZZ NOTE® Guest Artist Series, curated by our own TED CHUBB, with “Being Gig Ready” at 6:30 pm. Check out this video with Christian and Ted riffing about tonight’s session:
To register and see the entire trimester schedule, visit our website events page.
Friday! We invite you to see our mission in action at our Fall Student Showcase. I’ll be hosting, along with Christian, the instructors and our arts team, so please tune in on Facebook starting at 7:00 pm.
And lastly, save the date of Thursday, December 17th for our virtual holiday celebration. We will toast to this crazy year, hear live music from our students and faculty and yes – play reindeer games. Stay tuned for more info!
With gratitude,
DONOR SPOTLIGHT: FOUNDATIONS
When we look back over the past 10 months since the pandemic hit, we weren’t sure how we would get to the end of the year with so much devastation and so much at risk. We’d like to take a moment to recognize the special COVID-19 relief JAZZ HOUSE KiDS has received, ensuring that we could be here today.
We thank the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts for providing special funding and advocating for the value and importance of the arts.
Thanks also to the Mockingbird Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Phish fans, which awarded emergency grant funds to JAZZ HOUSE KiDS and others on the front lines of arts education.
We were honored to receive support from the Mid Atlantic Arts Regional Resilience Fund. JAZZ HOUSE KiDS was one of just four New Jersey arts organizations selected to receive this prestigious grant.
As always, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the many individual donors and organizations rallying around us as the year comes to an end. JAZZ HOUSE KiDS‘ mission simply doesn’t happen without you. Thank you for helping us keep the music playing. And what beautiful music it is!
ALUMNI ALERT! IN THE NEWS
It gives us great pride to celebrate the achievements of all our alumni — no matter what paths they take — but today we’d like highlight the accomplishments of two who have recently taken the jazz world by storm.
IMMANUEL WILKINS
Debut album “Omega” named one of 2020’s Ten Best by The New York Times
Thanks to our good friend and and artistic director of the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts, LOVETT HINES, every summer Immanuel would join us for our highly anticipated JAZZ HOUSE Summer Workshop and round out one of the best sax sections of young people you have ever heard. After attending the Juilliard School where he met up once again with his JAZZ HOUSE tribe, fast forward, today he has become one of the premier young names on the scene. We can’t wait to see where Immanuel’s career will take him. Straight ahead, Immanuel — congrats from your JAZZ HOUSE family!
MATTHEW WHITAKER
2020 ASCAP Foundation Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award Winner
The many fans of Matthew Whitaker at the JAZZ HOUSE have been listening to him astound us since he was seven years old and his continued success comes as no surprise. Currently a student at the Juilliard School, Matthew received the Young Composers Award, established to recognize and encourage young gifted jazz composers, for the 2nd year in a row. Last night, Matthew performed at the ASCAP Foundation virtual ceremony and was presented with this year’s award. We applaud Matthew’s continued success!
YEAR-END APPEAL!
Our 2020 Year-End Appeal is underway, and we would be so grateful to count you among our supporters as we continue to bring communities together during this challenging time and face the year ahead. Our work simply doesn’t happen without the generosity of special friends like you! Thank you for your consideration.
