Creative Jazz Composition Workshop
Sunday 12:00 PM – 1:15 PM | Instructor: Alexis Cuadrado
Jazz composition is a unique art form in which pieces serve as “tunes,” as frames for improvisation, and as a vehicle for expressing one’s creativity as a jazz artist. This project-based course is open to students of all abilities interested in developing as composers by experimenting with writing concepts, expanding their improvising voices through composition, and improve their general musicianship. The course follows a workshop format, where participants openly discuss their work in a safe space, discover by both “doing” and by “talking about doing,” and learn from their peers as well as from the instructor. Students will be writing, performing, and recording their creations and will collaborate by playing in other composers’ pieces. The workshop’s outcome will be a Jazz House Kids “Real Book” style binder that students and the community can use in their musical endeavors.
