JAZZ HOUSE KiDS is excited to announce our 2020-2021 programs, welcoming instrumental and vocal students of all levels and abilities, from beginners to pre-professionals headed to the nation’s top college music programs.
Things are buzzing at the JAZZ HOUSE as we prepare for the upcoming trimester. Registration is now open for NEW and RETURNING students! Whether you’re new to the JAZZ HOUSE or you’ve been with us for a while, you must complete the following:
As James Brown would say, “Get things started on the good foot!” Auditions are required for placement in all ensembles. Students who submitted an audition to participate in the 2020 JAZZ in JUNE or JAZZ in JULY programs do not need to submit a new audition. Visit our audition process page for more information.

Placement decisions will be provided within 7-days of your audition submission so you can start choosing your electives.

Time: 4:00 – 5:15 pm | Instructor: Ed Palermo The Louis Armstrong Ensemble is the place where our youngest beboppers meet and are introduced to the joy of swing! With many custom arrangements and an always positive attitude, our instructors make the first steps easy and enjoyable!
BLUES + ROOTS
Time: 6:30 – 7:45 pm | Instructor: Bruce Williams
The road to jazz is paved with “Blues & Roots!” Students will begin to build on their foundation of jazz by starting with the blues, standard tunes, and jazz classics in a fun and engaging setting. Young improvisers will be introduced to beginning theory and other early building blocks needed to enhance their musicianship.
ORGAN BLUES + ROOTS
Time: 6:30 – 7:45 pm | Instructor: Radam Schwartz
Building on the foundation of jazz, blues & roots swings with the jazz organ, with its rich history and distinct style. Through the canon of this instrument, students will gain a stronger understanding of improvisation.
PRODUCTION + RECORDING I
Monday 5:00 – 6:15 pm | Instructor: Lee Hogans In this class students will explore the essential recording and production techniques necessary to create their own songs. Learn the art of music production online and take your music to the next level.
THE PIANO SHED I
Monday 5:00 – 6:15 pm | Instructor: Kelly Green
This core session will help students expand their piano technique, ensemble and solo playing by exploring fundamental concepts of chord voicings, hand independence, improvisational approaches, and a vast variety of pianistic tools for their shed!

JAZZ HOUSE MESSENGERS

Serious fun for the serious-minded jazz student! The Messengers ensemble explores the art of improvisation, group interaction, and jazz performance while engaging in the advanced study of the jazz idiom.

Get started on your own creative path now by unlocking your true artistic voice through composition. The session will end with a recording of your new music!
PRODUCTION + RECORDING II

This production class will work on the essential recording and techniques students learned this summer. You’ll create your own recordings from start to finish.
LEGACY/DYNASTY BiG BAND

The LEGACY/DYNASTY BiG BAND explores the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charles Mingus, and other grand masters of jazz. This ensemble addresses jazz phrasing and improvisation, and focuses on developing skills for playing in a section.
PIANO SHED II

This class will help you develop your piano chops even further. Improve your ensemble and solo playing by exploring advanced concepts of chord voicings, hand independence, approaches to modern improvisational and a vast variety of other pianistic tools! (Intermediate)

If you’re a movie buff this class is for you! Learn the musical secrets behind your favorite films and compose your own melodies to real film sequences using motifs, harmony and various stylistic approaches.

Hosted by world-renowned guests artists, these weekly masterclasses are included in every program package, including the ALL ACCESS ELECTIVE PASS. These are also available to our international students. To connect our community, all students, family and faculty are invited to attend our pre-masterclass Hang @ Home dinner table conversations to be held at the beginning of each trimester.

This ensemble explores the art of solo and choral singing, plus provides comprehensive instruction in jazz theory and history. All singers from novice to advanced welcome! Vocal students may choose ANY one elective offered Monday – Thursday. Instrumental students may also choose Vocal Choir as an elective.

This class is a MUST for all drummers, percussionists and musicians interested in exploring a world of rhythmic possibilities.

Students will learn core rhythms from the rich heritage of Afro-Caribbean and South American styles. This fun and challenging class explores a variety of styles that enable you to play with players and ensembles from different backgrounds. (Intermediate)
Sunday Instrumental Pre-College Academy
Among the nation’s top pre-collegiate instrumental training program for serious-minded advanced students from across the region. The flagship program includes the awarding-winning JAZZ HOUSE Big Band and JAZZ HOUSE Ambassadors Ensemble. Held on Sunday afternoons throughout the school year, the rich elective offering help emerging musicians take their musicianship to the next level. JAZZ HOUSE Academy students participate in high-profile annual performances, competitions and touring to further enhances national exposure of these talented students. Many of our alums go on to attend world-class conservatories and prestigious academic institutions with significant merit-based music scholarships and are recognized on today’s jazz scene as tomorrow’s rising stars.

EAR TRAINING/SIGHT READING

This advanced class will help students through the terrain of developing an ear that can pick out basic harmonies, intervals and scales. Students will improve their playing and performance, and become all-around better musicians!

The advanced composition class will help bring your ideas to life, by providing you with the tools necessary to explore artistic and creative expression by studying melody, counterpoint, form, and orchestration.
