MARCH 2 – APRIL 21
Saturdays | 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm @ THE JAZZ HOUSE
Ages 9-19 | All levels welcome
JAZZ HOUSE KiDS, a Montclair-based nonprofit that has gained a reputation as one of the nation’s preeminent arts education and performance organizations, announces “CHiCA Power,” a special instrumental residency for young female and non-binary musicians. Held each Saturday afternoon from 1:00 – 5:00 pm, the CHiCA Power Residency® is part of JAZZ HOUSE KiDS’ ongoing mission to close the gap in arts education, giving young musicians an artistic edge and the tools needed to break down barriers to a life-long love of playing jazz. Free for girls and non-binary students in grade 6-12 with at least one year of playing experience and the ability to read music, the residency is funded by ongoing support from the Montclair Fund for Women and other private donors. Pre-registration is required.
Students will learn about jazz pioneers such as Mary Lou Williams, Melba Liston, Shirley Scott and Marian McPartland and study present day jazz icons such as Esperanza Spalding, Regina Carter, Anat Cohen, Terri Lyne Carrington and Geri Allen. Each week, the participants will break out into ensembles by level, learning compositions by female jazz artists.
Girl’s Night Out
March 7th 4:00-8:00PM
The fun continues after the session is over with our annual Girl’s Night Out! We’ll start with a jam session and dinner, then we’ll move into murder mysteries! Everyone will be assigned a character, and work together to solve a (fictitious) murder mystery! More details + permission slip to come!
