JAZZ HOUSE NYC YOUTH CLASSES

The JAZZ HOUSE, in collaboration with Trinity Church Wall Street, opens a new campus: JAZZ HOUSE NYC, located at Trinity Commons in lower Manhattan.  JAZZ HOUSE NYC offers free small group jazz education to both new and established musicians in the NYC area. Open to all Trinity Youth. Below you will find more information on both beginner and advanced programs.

JAZZ HOUSE @ Trinity Instrumental Jazz Academy

JAZZ ACADEMY

Take your musicianship to the next level! Our Jazz Academy is among the nation’s top pre-collegiate instrumental training programs for serious-minded advanced students. Students will work with world-class jazz artists in weekly semi-private lessons, small ensembles, and Big Band to develop their skills and musical voice.

SMALL ENSEMBLES

MONDAYS 5:15PM – 7:30PM
Learn how to play like the masters in small ensembles! Each of the ensembles focus on different eras and music of jazz to keep students engaged with the large variety of jazz music!

Ambassador Ensemble

Ambassador Ensemble works on repertoire spanning from the Great American Songbook to the intricate fusion melodies of today, led by the great, Steve Wilson.

Messengers Ensembles

Messengers Ensembles build on the skills gained in Blues + Roots, and develop a deeper understanding of jazz improvisation and the history of the art form.

Blues + Roots Ensembles

Blues + Roots ensembles explore the foundations of jazz, the BLUES! Aimed at players that are just getting their feet wet in the jazz vernacular and are looking to expand their musical voice!

Vocal Jazz Academy

WEDNESDAYS 4:00PM – 5:15PM
Vocal Academy is aimed at vocalists who want to explore rich jazz harmonies and want to learn how to sing with a big band!

LARGE ENSEMBLES

WEDNESDAYS 5:30PM – 7:30PM
These ensembles provide students with expansive instruction in a Big Band setting, playing a wide variety of intricate arrangements and music from legendary jazz composers.

Afro Latin Ensemble

The Afro Cuban Ensemble recreates the historical Latin Jazz (aka Cubop) repertoire as well as folkloric Latin American and Salsa fundamentals

Unity Ensemble

The Unity Ensemble focuses on the development of players to perform in a big band setting, building skills like listening, articulation, and improvisation. Emphasis is put on performing standard big band repertoire, as well as exploring new arrangements!

52nd St Big Band

The 52nd St. Big Band is comprised of some of JAZZ HOUSE NYC’s most eager and talented NYC artists. Hailing from all five boroughs, this dynamite ensemble has been tackling repertoire from all corners of the jazz idiom, from historic big band charts to TV theme songs. Under the direction of Erica von Kleist, the 52nd St. Big Band has developed a diverse repertoire of musical literature from across many decades.

SMALL GROUP LESSONS

Weekly access to small group lessons are a key component for our student’s success on the bandstand. Once a student signs up for a music program at Trinity, they will be assigned to a weekly small group lesson.

JAZZ HOUSE STRiNGS youth class

STRINGS

THURSDAYS 4:00PM – 5:15PM
This exciting program captures the essence of jazz education from a string player’s perspective. Students will learn the basics of the blues, chord structure and harmony, jazz history, improvisation and swing. Taught by a master educator and string player, the curriculum will encourage students to adopt a jazz musician mindset with regards to playing in a group, listening to each other, and being a part of a band.

PAGE ONE

Open to all Trinity Youth, JAZZ HOUSE NYC, part of Trinity Youth Afterschool, will expand access to free musical training and jazz education in small and large group ensembles; improvisation; novice programs for beginners, which will include use of a new instrument; jazz vocals and African drumming. Classes will take place at Trinity Commons in lower Manhattan.

Page One Ensemble

is the place to learn how to play an instrument! This exciting program includes three components: a loaner instrument to kickstart your musical journey, access to weekly small group lessons, and jazz ensemble experience.

Louis Armstrong Ensemble

picks up where Page One leaves off, and is aimed at folks who already have 1 year playing experience and want to learn more about jazz and improvisation!

Small Group Lessons

5:30PM – 6:30 PM
Weekly access to small group lessons are a key component for our student’s success on the bandstand. Most of our small group lessons take place on Mondays.

RHYTHMS MAKERS

THURSDAYS 3:45PM – 5:00PM  |  Learn the nuances of different drums, and perform in a group dedicated to rhythm! A few of the rhythms we will explore in the Drum Ensemble: West African, Cuban, Brazilian and Peruvian.

Guitar Ensemble

THURSDAYS 4:00PM – 5:00PM  |  Learn how to play the guitar in a friendly, inviting, and fun ensemble!

Piano Ensemble

THURSDAYS 4:00PM – 5:00PM  |  Whether you’ve never touched a piano keyboard, or you’ve played at home for months, join the Piano Ensemble and explore jazz performance in a group setting!
