On The Sunny Side of The Street - JAZZ HOUSE KiDS enewletter

FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER

Dear Friends and Families,

Welcome back to On the Sunny Side of the Street!

We took a few weeks off bringing you the newsletter leading up last Friday night’s virtual “Playing Through the Changes Benefit Concert.” We are grateful for the many supporters who are lending a hand at this critical time. We also thank the many hands that worked to make the spectacular concert possible and the artists who make our days sunny!

More than 19,000 people from around the world watched online! The uplifting benefit concert, hosted by NBC News anchor, Lester Holt and curated by our very own Christian McBride, kicked off the JAZZ HOUSE Relief Fund created to address our urgent financial need in the wake of COVID-19 and alleviate the risk it poses to our programmatic future.

For those who missed the the program last Friday, good news!

Lester Holt hosting Playing Through The Changes" Benefit Concert

In addition to our wonderful and talented current and former students, the evening featured live appearances and exceptional moments from the JAZZ HOUSE KiDS archives with more than 20 musical greats in concert and conversation who returned to the JAZZ HOUSE to lend their support.

Some of the most touching moments included a stirring performance from Dianne Reeves singing from her home in Colorado, Eddie Palmieri playing for us from home, David Sanborn remembering his friend the one and only Al Jarreau and passionate remarks from Diana Krall who played with JAZZ HOUSE students at an event earlier in the year and spectacular segments showcasing young talent currently in training. Playing Through the Changes told the story of how young people come into the JAZZ HOUSE as early as seven years old and their lives are shaped on and off the bandstand through music, mentoring, education and apprenticeship. With help from our extraordinary faculty and the lasting friendships that are made, we see our young people go to college, keep filling the world with music and them come back to “play it forward” with younger generations.

It was extremely fitting that the opening and closing musical selection of the “Playing Through the Changes” Benefit Concert was the instrumental and vocal debut of “On the Sunny Side of the Street” by the 75-member strong JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Alumni Super Band, under the direction of trumpeter, Nathan Eklund and arranged by Eklund, and veteran faculty members, Ed Palermo and Dylan Pramuk. What a technological and musical feat! You all make us SO proud!

Again, I’d like to thank our early JAZZ HOUSE KiDS RELIEF FUND supporters led by Neal Lazar of Manhattan Mechanical and TD Bank. We are grateful to all the people who were inspired by the mission of JAZZ HOUSE KiDS.

We know the road back to good health will be long, but with your support, JAZZ HOUSE KiDS will serve as an instrument for change and share the spirit of jazz with everyone we meet for another 18 years and more! Every amount, no matter how small, helps this organization play through the changes. To donate, visit us here.

Enjoy the warm summer weather and get outdoors — safely!

“You can learn all the theory, and all the things you have need to express yourself and communicate, but to be able to, at the end of the night, to just play together, with the support of each other and feel joy — that is what JAZZ HOUSE KiDS does every day. So please join me and my fellow artists in supporting this gem of an organization.”

~ Diana Krall
