FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER
Dear friends and families,
Welcome to this week’s On the Sunny Side of the Street Vol. 7! Coming to you a little later than usual, but as always, we have an exciting look at what we’ve been doing to help our community stay connected, creative and uplifted. A special greeting to all our moms as we look to celebrate you this weekend.
This past Saturday was such a gorgeous day here in Montclair, that, along with the temperature, our spirits rose. Christian and I were inspired to take to our front porch to share a bit of jazz with our neighbors. Live music is such an essential part of our expression of what it means to be free and to be connected with the world around us. A number of us at the JAZZ HOUSE decided to join forces for a pop-up concert we coined, Make Music for Your Neighbors Day. Such fun to see the smiles on people’s faces walking or riding by, accompanied by a few friendly honks and claps as people pulled over in their cars. Several of our JAZZ HOUSE families participated in their own neighborhoods like the Adelmans who set up a mini-stage on their front lawn with a full drum set, guitar, flute and vocals. What a way to close April’s Jazz Appreciation Month!
With our spring semester of classes winding down in a few weeks and students preparing for their final concert, we’ve been thinking about what our students will be doing this summer! This summer we are taking the learning experience online. This was not an easy decision because the JAZZ HOUSE Summer Workshop is beloved, but we do feel like it is the right decision. In its place, Ted Chubb, director of the JAZZ HOUSE Summer Workshop and Markus Gottschlich, our director of education, have put together a special offering for not only students in our own backyard, but friends around the globe who usually join us in person. The doors are officially open to enroll in our Online Summer Program — check out our 8-week offering with more than 100 hours of exciting learning!
Many of you have asked us about the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL. Produced by JAZZ HOUSE KiDS each August, this is another huge highlight of the summer for thousands of jazz fans from across the region as well as a one-of-a-kind performance experience for our workshop students. With social distancing our top priority, this year’s People’s Choice pick for Best Music Festival will not take place in August. Again, it is with heavy heart to share the news but that will not stop us!!! We’ve got lots of plans in the works for a September Spectacular which we will announce soon. In the meantime, we invite you connect with us for our new Tuesday LunchTime Live series brought to you by the MONTCLAIR
JAZZ FESTIVAL. This week we brought organist, Radam Schwartz right to your door. Each week we will feature one of our talented faculty members, friends or alums in performance LIVE on the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL Facebook page. Grab a sandwich or salad and enjoy some great jazz!’
Psst…It’s a secret!! I’d like to thank our esteemed panel (Linda Moody, Renee Rosnes, Mark Gross, Nathan Eklund, Christian McBride and program director Ted Chubb) who reviewed the candidate submissions for the James Moody Scholarship for New Jersey this week. The scholarship was established by Moody’s widow and love of his life, Linda Moody. JAZZ HOUSE KiDS, is honored to partner with Linda each year to award the $5,000 prize and professional level instrument thanks to RS Berkeley Musical Instruments. The prize is awarded annually to an outstanding high school senior who embodies the qualities expressed by the NEA Jazz Master through his life and works — musicianship, creativity, leadership and community involvement. Says Linda, “This scholarship would be an immense source of pride for Moody. He fondly recalled growing up in Newark and was always thrilled when he could provide aspiring musicians with the resources he never had. Moody’s enormous presence will always be with us.” We’ll announce the winner next month.
Last but not least, our FRIDAY NIGHT HANG @ HOME LISTENING PARTY continues. On May 1, close to 2,000 people watched with pride to hear what some of our talented JAZZ HOUSE ALUMS are up to and listen to the music that keeps them inspired, growing and shooting for the stars. The future of jazz is in great hands. Hang tight if you missed it we will rebroadcast on YouTube soon.
