FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dear friends and families,

Happy International Jazz Day and welcome to this week’s On the Sunny Side of the Street Vol. 6!

Each week we bring you a look at what we’ve been doing to stay connected, creative and uplifted.

International Jazz Day was started in UNESCO with Goodwill Ambassador HERBIE HANCOCK in 2011 to raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people, as well as an educational tool. Due to the pandemic, today’s worldwide celebration, which Christian and I were set to attend, is being transitioned to a virtual format instead of taking place as previously planned in Cape Town, South Africa and other locations around the world. (Watch International Jazz Day Celebration at 3:00 pm ET today) . As we close Jazz Appreciation Month and mark International Jazz Day , I must take a moment to reflect upon all musicians in our community we tragically lost to COVID-19. We thank them for their music…may they Rest In Peace.

This Saturday, in honor of International Jazz Day , JAZZ HOUSE KiDS alums, students and friends will go out to their porches or stoops and lift up their voices and instruments to play for our neighbors. We want to celebrate all this music has given us, especially our young people who stand on the shoulders of the jazz greats who came before them to bring this music forward. We invite you to dust off that instrument and join us anytime between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 2 for JAZZ HOUSE KiDS first pop-up performance of Music for Your Neighbors Day. Have one of your family members post on social media, and if you tag #jazzhousekids, we’ll share them next week.

NEW! Online Summer Programming – Registration Opened
For more than 17 years, JAZZ HOUSE KiDS has delivered programming that engages and excites students, promotes harmony and collaboration and builds musicianship. This summer promises to be no different…it will just be brought to students online . We’ve created two fantastic programs — 8 weeks and more than 100 hours of online learning! Under the direction of TED CHUBB, our head of summer programming, we have built TWO NEW online programs that will engage students and build musicianship. Check out all the details below and on our website.

I’ll let Ted and his friend Christian give you an overview of this summer’s offering:[/vc_column_text][vc_video el_width=”70″ align=”center”][vc_column_text]As we celebrate International Jazz Day (for the entire weekend!), I first want to thank our outstanding panelists at last Friday’s Hang @ Home Vocal part II Listening Party: WILL DOWNING, KURT ELLING and VUYO SOTACHE. I had such a great time hosting!

This Sunday, May 3rd at 4:00 pm ET on our live stream page, we will re-broadcast our Hang @ Home Listening Party, “Trumpet Talk” with an esteemed panel of horn players, MARCUS PRINTUP, FREDDIE HENDRIX, TED CHUBB and NATHAN EKLUND. Host CHRISTIAN McBRIDE leads a lively conversation with some outstanding music.

I can’t wait for tomorrow night’s Friday Night Hang @ Home Listening Party when seven of our super talented JAZZ HOUSE KiDS alums take over . Plan to be amazed at the ingenuity, talent and drive of the next generation of jazz musicians. “America’s home grown music” is in good hands. Catch it at 8:00 pm ET on Zoom or Facebook Live.

Here’s to sunnier days ahead,

Melissa Walker signature

P.S. We thank all of our contributors who are able to lend their support at this time and help us meet the Herb Alpert Foundation Challenge, which will match new or increased donations to JAZZ HOUSE KiDS…please join us![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css=”.vc_custom_1585241015700{padding-bottom: 50px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1587672531259{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 15px !important;background-color: #1660a1 !important;}”]
