FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dear friends and families,
Welcome to this week’s On the Sunny Side of the Street Vol. 4! For those who celebrated this past weekend, I hope you had a happy Passover or Easter and were able to connect with family and friends.
This newsletter brings you a look at what we’ve been doing to stay connected, creative and uplifted, especially in the classroom this week.
But first, I want to thank last week’s Hang @ Home guests. The talented jazz pianist and composer HELEN SUNG conducted a well-attended masterclass with students from all over the world, and tonight we just finished an incredible masterclass with saxophonist DOUG LAWRENCE on the big band saxophone section and legendary soloists.
Last Friday night, we had a great hang with dynamic rhythm section players RICK CARLISLE, MARK WHITFIELD and JEFF “TAIN” WATTS sharing with our global audience their favorite rhythm sections of all time. We’re building an online library on our JAZZ HOUSE KiDS YouTube channel with all of these videos. Next Sunday, April 26 we will re-air the session where I hosted the dynamic duo of DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER and CECILE McLORLIN SALVANT. Stay tuned!
Awesome faculty…we thank you!!!!
Our faculty had to make significant adaptations to the way they teach and present their materials in order to bring our students top-quality jazz online education each week. It’s no surprise that these expert innovators haven’t missed a beat in adapting to new technologies. I would like to applaud them for the many strides they have made including assembling pre-recorded student ensemble parts for a culminating concert next month. This is enhancing our students’ learning, as they experience the recording process firsthand. Through the magic of technology, we will be treated to their online performances next month.
We thank all of our contributors who are able to lend their support at this time and help us meet the Herb Alpert Foundation Challenge, which will match new or increased donations to JAZZ HOUSE KiDS…please join us!
Enjoy this weeks student spotlight from Riley Ying! Here’s to sunnier days ahead,
P.S. See you this Friday, April 17th at 8:00 pm EST on Zoom and Facebook Live for our next Hang @ Home Listening Party – We’re going to talk about SAX with host Christian McBride and our esteemed panelists. Wednesday’s “Hang @ Home” Student Masterclasses!
This week’s masterclasses featured our special guest, Doug Lawrence and our ongoing drum master, Alvester Garnett!
Saxophone Masterclass
with DOUG LAWRENCE
Open to non-JAZZ HOUSE students!
Tonight’s JAZZ HOUSE KiDS featured DOUG LAWRENCE, acclaimed tenor saxophonist from the 18-GRAMMY Award-winning Count Basie Orchestra! Doug explored the styles and key elements of the orchestra’s saxophone section and legendary soloists.
About Doug Lawrence
Doug Lawrence has spent the last 20 years in New York City, where he has worked with Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, and Roy Eldridge among others. He has recorded with many prominent jazz musicians such as Buck Clayton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Wild Bill Davis, Hank Jones, Mel Lewis, and George Cables, and produced four albums as a leader. A frequent guest clinician and artist-in-residence at universities and jazz camps across the world, Doug has been a featured performer at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Village Vanguard, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and at international concert halls and jazz festivals including the Sydney Opera House, the Moscow International House of Music, the Blue Note Tokyo, Telluride Jazz Celebration and the North Sea Jazz Festival. In addition to being the featured tenor soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra, Lawrence works with the drummer Jimmy Cobb and leads his own band called the Doug Lawrence Organic Trio or Quartet.
Founded in 1935, the Count Basie Orchestra featured many of the greatest instrumentalists and vocalists in jazz, including Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Sweets Edison, Joe Jones, Joe Williams, Snooky Young, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Frank Wess, and Clark Terry, amongst others. The legendary orchestra has performed for royal audiences across the world; was been featured in movies, television shows, TV and radio commercials; and won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once. Its 18 GRAMMY Award wins are the most for any orchestra of all time.

If you’re in a position to help, we could really use your support right now to help keep the JAZZ HOUSE swingin’![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
In four short weeks, the JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Friday Night Hang @ Home Series has reached close 80,000 viewers from across the nation and around the globe hearing from artists such as NEA Jazz Master DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER, RICK CARLISLE from the Dallas Mavericks, and the stunning vocalist CECILE McLORIN SALVANT talking music and trading stories.

“On the Sunny Side of the Street”
Our long-time JAZZ HOUSE KiDS teaching artist, saxophonist MIKE LEE performs regularly with the Loston Harris Trio, Nat Adderley Jr. Quartet, the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Alumni Big Band, Lenny White Quartet, Josh Evans Big Band, and Oliver Lake Big Band. As an instructor and clinician, Mike has led masterclasses at many conservatories and music schools. He is professor of Jazz Saxophone at Montclair State University.
The Lee family is social distancing with a household of talented musicians — his wife, violinist Rebecca Lee and three talented offspring — Julian, a JAZZ HOUSE alum and two current students, Matthew and Jacquie.
“Under quarantine with my oldest, Julian. Julian has already toured the world, played with Wynton Marsalis quintet, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Michael Mwenso and the Shakes and many others. People often say I must be proud, but beyond pride, there is a joy in playing music with him that is indescribable. I hope you feel that joy.”
