FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dear friends and families,

Founder & President Melissa WalkerWelcome to this week’s On the Sunny Side of the Street Vol. 3! I send you well wishes and my hope that your families and colleagues are managing to weather the storm. It has been an especially exciting and busy week at the JAZZ HOUSE. We continue to reach thousands of emerging musicians with weekly classes and music fans through our Hang at Home Online Sessions. I send a heartfelt thank you to Dee Dee Bridgewater and Cécile McLorin Salvant for joining us for last week’s Friday night Listening Party. If missed it you can check us out here.

Our reality of living in uncharted territory and forging new paths across an unfamiliar landscape continues. Many of our beloved nonprofit organizations, including JAZZ HOUSE KiDS, are seeking new revenue sources — new donors, government emergency loans — to help weather the storm. We thank those able to lend their support at this time and help us meet the Herb Alpert Foundation Challenge for which they will match dollar-for-dollar new or increased donations to the organization.

As we work toward this goal, we are also cognizant of our families with serious immediate needs. Some of our JAZZ HOUSE KiDS families in both our in-school programs and at our facility in downtown Montclair have been negatively impacted more than others with the COVID-19 pandemic. Families are struggling with the added burden of lost jobs, financial hardship or family members who are sick. One family had to file for bankruptcy. Now is the time to help these families.

JAZZ HOUSE KiDS has started an initiative to deliver small financial care packages of direct support to our most at risk families. We have begun to pool donations from our families to other families. Many of our team members have been so inspired that they too have donated . This has allowed us to purchase VISA gift cards for our families most hard hit so that they can use them where the need is greatest.

To date, we have delivered financial care packages to 12 families and trust we brightened their day just a bit by lending a helping hand. We are going to continue to keep in close touch with our JAZZ HOUSE KiDS families most at risk and provide assistance as we can. Our hope is to send these small financial care packages each month, covering as many hard-hit families as possible.

If you would like to join our Sunny Side of the Street Care Package effort, it’s easy to make a contribution to this project through Venmo, check or credit card:

      1. Venmo: @jazzhousekids
      2. Website: www.jazzhousekids.org/donate
      3. Call us with your credit card information at 973-744-2273
      4. Mail a check to JAZZ HOUSE KiDS at 347 Bloomfield Ave, Lower Level, Montclair, NJ 07042

We are lifted every day by the kind and generous, as well as resilient JAZZ HOUSE KiDS community. We send a heartfelt thank you for helping during this time.

Our best wishes for your strength, good health and persistence during these challenging times.

Stay healthy and keep on swinging!

Wednesday’s “Hang @ Home” Student Masterclasses!

Student Online Classes Continue without Interruption

Spring Break plans? No, we’re all staying home. We’ve heard from many of our families that say they are extremely grateful for JAZZ HOUSE KiDS quickly getting up and running for online learning. The stay at home classes provide welcome structure and social interaction with their peers. Based on feedback from our families, and for the continuity of learning, we will not take a Spring Break this year. That means student online classes will continue as scheduled next week through the rest of semester online. Stay tuned for more details on a special end-of-semester remote concert event on Friday, May 15th. A big “thank you” goes out to all our faculty for working hard during this time adjusting to the challenges of remote learning.

Masterclasses TONIGHT! Are you Registered?

Our third week of masterclasses are coming up tonight and we have a few spots left! With a rotating focus, each week we present a notable artist and educator taking our students into their musical world. Space is limited and we will have participants from around the globe for these one-of-a-kind, virtual, interactive jazz masterclasses. Walk with us as we transform!

Composition Conversations
with HELEN SUNG
Open to non-JAZZ HOUSE students!

Pianist Helen Sung
Pianist Helen Sung

As part of our rotating masterclasses series, we are thrilled that composer HELEN SUNG will join us tonight for a masterclass on composition. One of the major lessons pianist/composer Helen Sung learned as a Monk Institute jazz student under bass legend Ron Carter was: “if you want to develop your own voice, you need to write your own music.” So every other week, when Mr. Carter held his classes, she and her fellow students had to have a new composition ready, which they played and then received his critique. Helen will share her lessons from that important experience, examining concepts in composition learned from her favorite jazz artists as well as the close ties between composition and improvisation.

This class is for Intermediate to Advanced level students of all instruments, but some piano skills are advised.

FRIDAY NIGHT LISTENING PARTIES: HANG @ HOME

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Through our 17 weekly online classes, JAZZ HOUSE KiDS students have been able to maintain a vital connection with their instructors and bandmates — the members of their musical family. We are hearing from both students and their parents that our online classes are providing much more than music education: they are offering routine; a chance for students to socialize and stay connected with their peers; and a likely therapeutic opportunity to focus intensively on something other than the pandemic.

By creating our Friday Night Hang @ Home Listening Parties, we have extended that connectivity and socialization to our wider community. These listening parties reach not only our “immediate family” of students, instructors, donors and friends, but also viewers from around the world. The Listening parties also serve a vital platform to raise funds for JAZZ HOUSE KiDS’ mission during this unprecedented time and participants are encouraged to donate to our “tip jar” via Venmo or our website.

The listening parties have been hugely popular — JAZZ HOUSE KiDS is known for hosting great events, and now we’ve brought them online! Like our signature concert-and-conversation events, our Friday night Hang @ Home series on Zoom and Facebook, hosted by CHRSTIAN McBRIDE and MELISSA WALKER, the listening parties feature many of the world’s top jazz players discussing the music and recordings that have had an out-sized impact on them. Over 50,000 viewers from around the world have already heard artists such as Marcus Printup, DeeDee Bridgewater, and Cecile McLorin Salvant talking music and trading stories.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”21638″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=”” css=”.vc_custom_1586391233468{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

JAZZ HOUSE KiDS is one of the most respected jazz education programs in the country. We use the power of jazz to help young people (ages 8-18) learn to blow their own horn, find their own voice and take their place on the stage called life. If you’re in a position to help, we could really use your support right now to help keep the JAZZ HOUSE swingin’![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css=”.vc_custom_1585240991886{padding-bottom: 50px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1585785175774{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 15px !important;background-color: #0974db !important;}”]
