FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dear friends and families,

Founder & President Melissa WalkerWelcome to this week’s On the Sunny Side of the Street! This is a place you can count on to lift your spirits and where you start to feel sunny when you sing the blues. We promise to inspire, delight and keep you informed.

We’ve had another incredible week of making music. Our team of dedicated and talented faculty and staff are an Instrument for Change each and every day. They have not skipped a beat and continue to amaze us with their innovations. In the last week alone, we produced over 30 hours of content reaching 175 students and more than 12,000 online music fans.

JAZZ HOUSE KiDS is thrilled to announce we have been awarded a first-time grant from the prestigious HERB ALPERT FOUNDATION!

Through the foundation, legendary trumpeter and A&M Records co-founder and National Medal of Arts recipient Herb Alpert and his wife, vocalist Lani Hall, generously support organizations that promote compassion and creativity. The Foundation is especially committed to jazz education, and we could not be more honored by their support and recognition of our mission in action.

“The Herb Alpert Foundation envisions a world where all people are blessed with opportunities that allow them to reach their potential and lead productive and fulfilling lives. Built on a constantly evolving tradition, Jazz is a powerful form of musical expression that should be nurtured and supported for the benefit of future generations. Toward that goal, the Foundation aims to help educate children about the beauty of this uniquely American art form.”
– Herb Alpert Foundation

The Herb Alpert Foundation has pledged $100,000 as a dollar-for-dollar match for new or increased gifts to JAZZ HOUSE KiDS. This is an unprecedented opportunity for us, especially at this time, and an ideal way for contributors to double their impact during our greatest time of need. I want to thank our many early donors for their generous contributions. Because of you, we have raised just over $50,000 toward meeting this challenge!

I have one simple request. Please make a gift if you can. You can help us literally be here tomorrow when the sun truly shines. To continue the conversation, please email me here.

On another note, it has been a tough week and the virus as come to the door of the JAZZ HOUSE community. I can’t close without sending our very grateful thanks to the many heroes on the front lines working tirelessly to be there for us.

We send our heartfelt get well wishes to our friends and families with loved ones who are ailing, especially our long-time in-school partner, Sandy Heintz, vice principal at Abington Avenue School in Newark. We wish Sandy and her husband a speedy recovery. One student recently told her that since she has been the rock in his life for so many years, now he would now stand beside her and be her rock. That’s what great education looks like and that’s what our friend Sandy epitomizes!

Our best wishes for your strength, good health and persistence during these challenging times. Stay healthy and keep on swinging!

GOOD NEWS: STIMULUS BILL PASSES

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

STIMULUS BILL OFFERS CRITICAL ASSISTANCE

The news out of Washington offered small businesses including nonprofits like JAZZ HOUSE KiDS a bit of hope. Congress passed the CARES Act on March 27th, which contains a one-time, deduction for individual charitable contributions of up to $300 ($600 for a couple). All taxpayers would be eligible to take the deduction, even people who don’t itemize their tax return. The incentive applies to contributions made in 2020 and would be claimed on tax forms next year. For corporate giving, the law raises the annual limit from 10 percent to 25 percent.

This historic bill offers vital support to our communities and beloved nonprofit organizations, and JAZZ HOUSE KiDS is following this closely. We know that it will encourage new support for the organization, benefiting our mission, students, faculty and staff.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1585791006375{margin-top: 20px !important;margin-right: 20px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;margin-left: 20px !important;padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #b1d139 !important;}”]

Thanks to our matching grant from the Herb Alpert Foundation,
every gift to JAZZ HOUSE KiDS will be matched 100%.

An individual’s gift of $300 turns into $600;
a family’s donation of $600 becomes $1,200

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]If you are able, we hope you will consider making a donation to JAZZ HOUSE KiDS to take advantage of this tax incentive and double your contribution.

Wednesday’s “Hang @ Home” Student Masterclasses!

Last week with great fanfare and success, we kicked off our online series of masterclasses for JAZZ HOUSE students: piano led by Oscar Perez and drums led by Alvester Garnett. More than 30 students took advantage of these special sessions.

With a rotating focus, each week we will present a notable artist and educator taking our students into their musical world. Tonight, we added two more sessions to enhance our students’ online experience. We welcome back ALVESTER GARNETT for a recurring drum masterclass and, for a second rotating topic session, NATHAN EKLUND will lead a class in brass.

Students! It’s not too late to join in tonight! Register for either class by sending an email to Daniela Gonzalez. She’ll send you a link to the masterclass. JAZZ HOUSE alums welcome!

JAZZ HOUSE KiDS is one of the most respected jazz education programs in the country. We use the power of jazz to help young people (ages 8-18) learn to blow their own horn, find their own voice and take their place on the stage called life. Wallace personified an ultimate dedication to his craft and artistry, and possessed a profound respect for the lineage of trumpet giants that he was a part of. Many among our faculty, alumni, and JAZZ HOUSE families knew him a mentor and friend.
