On The Sunny Side Of The Street: Volume 12

On The Sunny Side of The Street - JAZZ HOUSE KiDS enewletter

FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER

Dear Friends and Families,

Welcome to On the Sunny Side of the Street! We hope this finds you well, and getting outdoors to enjoy the warm weather and explosion of color in yards and parks. On the Sunny Side of the Street is where we take a look at what we’ve been doing to help our community stay connected, creative and uplifted.

JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Summer Experience is in full swing with our Hang @ Home Wednesday Summer Sessions with the Masters Series, JAZZ in JULY summer program for young people ages nine and up, an exciting adult summer class offering, our Friday Night Hang @ Home Listening Party and Tuesday’s Lunchtime Live MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL Concert and Rebroadcast on Thursday. It’s going to be an exciting summer…hope to see a lot of you!

Tonight, Christian and I are back hosting our Hang @ Home Listening Party, this time focusing on the quest for liberty and justice in our society through jazz. With our esteemed panel of artists, tonight we will explore the rich tapestry of jazz protest music then and now and what it means to use one’s craft to tackle our greatest challenges and propel society forward. We invite you to the first conversation of this multi-part series exploring Freedom Music.

  • GARY BARTZ, music is his sanctuary as bandleader, composer, activist in the Civil Rights and anti-war movements. In the early ’60s, he played with everyone from Charles Mingus, Max Roach and Abby Lincoln before joining Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and later, Miles Davis. Bartz’ incredible career has always been about moving forward and his musical intent is clear.
  • ViJAY IYER, pianist, composer, bandleader, producer, and writer has carved out a unique path as an influential, prolific, shape-shifting presence in modern music. The New York Times describes him as “social conscience, multimedia collaborator, system builder, rhapsodist, historical thinker and multicultural gateway.”
  • TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON, has forged an astounding career as a drummer, composer, singer, record producer, educator, and entrepreneur. Carrington is a leading voice for jazz, justice and gender. “Jazz’s birth as an African-American art form came into being as a way of expressing one’s self as a whole and authentic person.”

JAZZ HOUSE SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Diana Krall –  JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Playing Through the Changes Benefit Concert

One of the most celebrated voices and pianists of our time, DIANA KRALL holds a special place in the collective heart of of the JAZZ HOUSE. Earlier this year, she joined us at our 4th Annual Jazz Set, “The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian McBride,” an intimate evening of music and conversation hosted by RALPH PUCCI International. This clip is from our recent benefit, “Playing Through the Changes.” Take a listen to her thoughts on the importance of mentors and teachers,”something JAZZ HOUSE KiDS does for students every day.”
