WE’RE BACK! JAZZ HOUSE KiDS is excited to announce our 2021-2022 programs, welcoming instrumental and vocal students of all levels and abilities, from beginners to pre-professionals headed to the nation’s top college music programs.

2021-2022 CLASS OFFERING

Year-long IN-PERSON programming will be offered in two (2) semesters.  Online classes are also available for students across the world. Each semester will include optional in-person jam sessions, and winter and spring culminating concerts.

JAZZ HOUSE elective offerings are designed to give you a deep dive into the creative world of film composition, the thrill of recording + production, composition and arrangement, the rhythms of Latin Jazz and so much more! We are proud to be the nation’s only youth jazz organ program, along with offering 3 Big Bands, CHiCA Power® spring residency for our young female musicians, and a Louis Armstrong track for our young beboppers.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

Placement priority is given to students with applications completed by TBD. JAZZ HOUSE KiDS will accept submissions and registrations on a rolling basis after the deadline.

Things are buzzing at the JAZZ HOUSE as we prepare for the upcoming school year. Registration is now open for NEW and RETURNING students! Whether you’re new to the JAZZ HOUSE or you’ve been with us for a while, you must complete the following:

  • Registration Application
  • $25 Registration Fee / $100 Class Reservation Deposit
  • *Limited tuition assistance is available. Tuition Assistance Application deadline is September 17th, 2021
  • *All registration fees are non-refundable

#2 SUBMIT YOUR AUDITION

As James Brown would say, “Get things started on the good foot!” Auditions are required for placement in all ensembles. Students who submitted an audition to participate in the 2021 JAZZ HOUSE Summer Workshop program do not need to submit a new audition. Visit our audition process page for more information.

#3 PRE-PLACED ENSEMBLE

Small group combos and big band experiences are at the heart of the JAZZ HOUSE curriculum. Once students submit an audition they are pre-places into the appropriate level ensemble. Singers are places into our Vocal Academy.

MONDAY

ROOTS OF IMPROVISATION

Time: 5:00 – 6:00 pm   |  Instructor: Abel Mireles 
The Roots of Improvisation elective is for students looking to expand their base of jazz knowledge. This improv session will develop students’ theory and give them a stronger understanding of the language of improvisation.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG ENSEMBLE

Time: 6:15 – 7:30 pm   |  Instructor: ED PALERMO
The Louis Armstrong Ensemble is the place where our youngest beboppers meet and are introduced to the joy of swing! With many custom arrangements and an always positive attitude, our instructors make the first steps easy and enjoyable!

BLUES + ROOTS ENSEMBLE

Time: 6:15 – 7:30 pm  | Instructor: ABEL MIRELES 
The road to jazz is paved with “Blues & Roots!” Students will begin to build on their foundation of jazz by starting with the blues, standard tunes, and jazz classics in a fun and engaging setting. Young improvisers will be introduced to beginning theory and other early building blocks needed to enhance their musicianship.

ORGAN BLUES + ROOTS ENSEMBLE

Time: 6:15 – 7:45 pm  | Instructor: RADAM SCHWARTZ
Building on the foundation of jazz, blues & roots swings with the jazz organ, with its rich history and distinct style. Through the canon of this instrument, students will gain a stronger understanding of improvisation.30

DYNASTY BIG BAND

Time: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM | Instructor: Mike Lee
The LEGACY/DYNASTY BiG BAND explores the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charles Mingus, and other grand masters of jazz. This ensemble addresses jazz phrasing and improvisation, and focuses on developing skills for playing in a section.

ROOTS OF IMPROVISATION

JAZZ HOUSE MESSENGERS

Serious fun for the serious-minded jazz student! The Messengers ensemble explores the art of improvisation, group interaction, and jazz performance while engaging in the advanced study of the jazz idiom.

NEW: LATIN JAZZ ENSEMBLE (ONLINE)

Time: 4:00 PM – 5:15 PM | INSTRUCTOR: TBD
In partnership with the Dream Project’s Bachata Academy in the Dominican Republic, this ensemble is taught in Spanish, and builds on the foundations of jazz, and learning the blues, swing, and Latin rhythms.

 
RHYTHM SECTION WORKOUT

Time: 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM | Instructor: Alvester Garnett
This class is a MUST for all rhythm section musicians interested in exploring a world of rhythmic possibilities.

JAZZ HOUSE VOCAL CHOIR (STARTS NOV. 10th)

Time: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM | Instructor: Dylan Pramuk
This ensemble explores the art of solo and choral singing, plus provides comprehensive instruction in jazz theory and history. All singers from novice to advanced welcome! Instrumental students may also choose Vocal Choir as an elective.

MUSIC VIDEO PRODUCTION (ONLINE)

Time: 5:00 – 6:15 PM | Instructor: PETER LIN
New Offering! In this class, students will explore the essential recording and video production techniques necessary to create multimedia projects. Come away with your very own music video at the completion of this class! Basic Requirements for Elective: Smartphone with video capabilities. A Mac laptop or desktop for video and audio editing. (suggested software: Garageband and iMovie)


FILM SCORING + COMPOSITION ELECTIVE (ONLINE)

If you’re a movie buff this class is for you! Learn the musical secrets behind your favorite films and compose your own melodies to real film sequences using motifs, harmony and various stylistic approaches.

COMPOSITION (ONLINE)

Get started on your own creative path now by unlocking your true artistic voice through composition. The session will end with a recording of your new music!

SUNDAY INSTRUMENTAL PRE-COLLEGE ACADEMY

Time: 12:00 – 6:00 pm
Among the nation’s top pre-collegiate instrumental training programs for serious-minded advanced students from across the region. The flagship program includes the awarding-winning JAZZ HOUSE Big Band and JAZZ HOUSE Ambassadors Ensemble. Held on Sunday afternoons throughout the school year, the rich elective offerings help emerging musicians take their musicianship to the next level. JAZZ HOUSE Academy students participate in high-profile annual performances, competitions and touring to further enhance national exposure of these talented students. Many of our alums go on to attend world-class conservatories and prestigious academic institutions with significant merit-based music scholarships and are recognized on today’s jazz scene as tomorrow’s rising stars.
