Satish Robertson is a trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and producer, based in NY. As a small child during the 1980’s my young ears were drawn to all sorts of music. My grandma played everything from jazz to Motown, disco, classical, and then some on her turntable, and the radio stations played the then current hits by Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Eurythmics, New Edition, Salt N Pepa, etc. I loved it all. He specializes in jazz, gospel, hip-hop, blues, funk, R&B, neo-soul, house, ska, and electronic music. Miles Davis and John Coltrane would inspire me to pursue my path as a jazz musician, but I remain a fan of music all across the board. And like Miles in particular, I find delight in exploring stylistic mashups.
With the sounds of the 80’s revived in much of today’s pop music, and in the genre known as synthwave, I became inspired to do a record where I blend those 80’s elements with my personal approach to improvisational music. His latest album 80’s JOINT, which comprises of music that is a unique blend of jazz improvisation and 1980’s inspired synth pop, funk, rock, and R&B elements. As a nod to early Prince, I decided to compose, produce and perform all the music mostly by myself, playing all the parts on each tune (except for trombone on a few cuts).
