Got soul? We asked our JAZZ HOUSE Artistic Director, and 7-time GRAMMY-winning bassist, CHRISTIAN McBRIDE to curate this week’s playlist on SOUL JAZZ. He had a hard time narrowing it down, and only got through the 50’s and 60’s. Christian says he’ll have to do a 70’s and 80’s, and a 90’s-present list too!
His first Soul Jazz playlist will keep you movin’ and groovin’ to the funk and gospel inspired jazz that provided the soundtrack for jukeboxes across 1960s Black America. It’s be-bop roots with a heavy dose of blues, back beat, gospel, and soul, to get people out of their chairs and on to the dance floor. We’re talking Sam Cooke, Ruth Brown, Horace Silver, Aretha Franklin, Dinah Washington, Art Blakley, Jackie Wilson and more!
