HAPPY BIRTHDAY HERBIE HANCOCK!

Legendary jazz pianist and composer HERBIE HANCOCK has been on the forefront of jazz and popular music for more than 60 years. His music is rooted in blues and bebop, and fuses together a vast wealth of musical styles, technological advances and a searching quality for an unmistakably individual artistic voice.

April is Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), and no better time to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of this great music. JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz – to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more.

Celebrating his 81st birthday this month, Mr. Hancock serves as the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue as well as the Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. Each year on April 30, to close out Jazz Appreciation Month, the Institute organizes International Jazz Day, highlighting jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.

This week’s Spotify Playlist spans  Hancock’s illustrious career with 27 songs and more than three hours of music.  It curated by our own director of cultural programming + JAZZ HOUSE Summer Workshop, trumpeter TED CHUBB.
