On The Sunny Side of The Street - JAZZ HOUSE KiDS enewletter

FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER

Dear friends and families,

Melissa Walker on VespaWelcome to On the Sunny Side of the Street!

This is our weekly newsletter where we take a look at what we’ve been doing to help our community stay connected, creative and uplifted. Since March, JAZZ HOUSE KiDS has brought programming to more than 260,000 students and jazz fans. We love it!

This has not been a summer for hanging out at the beach for our JAZZ HOUSE KiDS team. Although, I am tooling around town on my Vespa. Be nice to us scooter riders on the road! While our programs are all online for now, we are changing things up with our new JAZZ HOUSE Summer Experience and gearing up for a special 2020 MONTCLAIR JAZZ FEST: A Season of Jazz (stay tuned for more news). We never stop swinging!

Here’s how our summer is shaping up:

  • Weekday mornings JAZZ in JULY directed by TED CHUBB
  • Tuesdays @ Noon MONTCLAIR JAZZ FEST LunchTime Live concerts. Next week features drummer VINCE ECTOR
  • Wednesdays @ 7:00 pm Summer Evening Masterclass Series curated by MARKUS GOTTSCHLICH. Next week features the great composer MARIA SCHNEIDER
  • NEW! Thursdays @ 1:00 pm, MONTCLAIR JAZZ FEST LunchTime Rebroadcasts
  • Fridays @ 8:00 pm Hang @ Home Listening Party

In true JAZZ HOUSE KiDS fashion, creativity is never in short supply with our team and I trust you will agree that the results are exciting and the learning continues.

JOIN US TONIGHT! Settling the Score – Meet the Composers

Hang @ Home Listening Party
with Christian McBride + Melissa Walker

Friday, July 24 | 8:00 pm ET
Zoom or Facebook

Before a song can be played and the story told, it first must be conceived and created. Tonight, Christian and I are welcome into our home three extraordinary jazz composers to the Hang @ Home Listening Party:

  • BILLY CHILDS one of the greatest composers of our time, bar none
  • HELEN SUNG known to fuse facets of her deep classical experience with jazz to an always surprising delight
  • OSCAR PEREZ, our longstanding faculty member filters his music through his rich Cuban roots for a wonderful cultural confluence

All three are incredibly gifted pianists and are expanding the cannon of jazz through composition. We sit down with these artists, all at different stages of their careers, to discover the process of creating a song and listening to compositions that inspire them.

I want to THANK three of my favorite vocalists for a wonderful evening last week for Part IV of The Singer and the Song: JAZZMEIA HORN, CYRILLE AIMEE, and vocal faculty member DYLAN PRAMUK. Keep your ears tuned in to their exciting careers.

Mark your calendars for Friday, July 31 when we swing into the world of the jazz organ. All I can say is hold onto your hat and batten down the hatches!!! We welcome to the Listening Party the one and only JOEY DeFRANCESCO, JAZZ HOUSE alum and rising star MATTHEW WHITAKER and our faculty member and master organist RADAM SCHWARTZ! Hammond B3 fans won’t want to miss this one!

Stay safe, soak up some sunshine and mask up (seriously we can do this)!
Straight ahead….

JAZZ HOUSE SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Meet Carly, one of our CHiCA Power students currently enrolled in our JAZZ in JULY program this summer.  We love that she has challenged herself musically, so instead of playing saxophone, her primary instrument, she challenges herself on the bassoon, playing “Grandfather’s Waltz.”  Enjoy!

JAZZ IN JULY

Our second week of JAZZ in JULY is in the books! More than 80 students from across the globe are logging on, learning and connecting. Each morning starts with our “Jazz & Eggs” session to go over the daily schedule and learn as a group. Then students and faculty break into individualized schedules — technique sessions for brass, saxophone, drums, piano, guitar, and voice; improv; film scoring; composition; production + recording; and virtual bands.

According to TED CHUBB, director of Summer Programming, 50 percent of JAZZ in JULY students are brand new to the organization. “I’ve been impressed by the high energy of all our students. They are eager to learn and fully engaged with their peers and teachers, ready to conquer online learning,” he said. “It feels very similar to the excitement of our in-person JAZZ HOUSE Summer Workshop.”

Every day at noon, all students and faculty come together for a special masterclass and Q&A. Our own 6-time GRAMMY Award-winning bassist CHRISTIAN McBRIDE welcomed special guests NEA Jazz Master and piano legend KENNY BARRON, jazz historian ASHLEY KHAN, and acclaimed saxophonist CHRIS POTTER.
