On The Sunny Side of The Street - JAZZ HOUSE KiDS enewletter

FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER

Dear friends and families,

Founder & President Melissa WalkerOn behalf of our entire team at the JAZZ HOUSE, I send you our war mest regards and hope that you and your loved ones are all healthy and are staying positive in these extraordinary times.

We could all use a little sunshine right now! This week we are introducing our new e-newsletter, ” JAZZ HOUSE KiDS on the Sunny Side of the Street. ” Here we’ll highlight some of the ways we’ve adjusted to remote learning, our amazing students and faculty and all the special programming we have planned, both online and, looking forward in the calendar, when we can all get together and play music.

A couple of highlights @ the JAZZ HOUSE…

  • In school programs: Our in-school instructor Lisette Santiago is using Google Classroom and other online platforms to continue daily music education classes at Link Community Charter School in Newark
  • Online learning: We have transitioned 15 ensemble classes online with value-added new masterclasses for the the best jazz education continuity possible. We’ve invited our current students as well as our emerging musicians from out of state and around the world to participate
  • Join us: Last Friday night we hosted our first interactive Hang @ Home Listening Session with our artistic director, Christian McBride doing a special feature on the late great McCoy Tyner which reached thousands of jazz fans from around the world. Tune in this Friday, March 27th for another session – showtime 8:00 pm. We thank the many donors who added to the Tip Jar!

I sign off thinking about our fellow artists and amazing arts organizations who work miracles each and every day to make society a better place and who are rising to the call right now, putting their extraordinary imagination and creativity to good use to help us through this period.

Lastly, but certainly not least, we thank the many heroes on the front lines working tirelessly in less than optimal circumstances many of whom at grave risk to themselves to be there for us.

Stay healthy and keep on swinging!

P.S. Written in 1930, “On the Sunny Side of the Street” is a jazz standard recorded by everyone from Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra to Ella Fitzgerald and Cyndi Lauper. I love this version by Esperanza Spalding, who performed with my husband Christian at the Obama White House in 2016. The award-winning bassist/vocalist helped out the JAZZ HOUSE a couple of times and our students will always remember her amazing musicianship and kind mentorship.

1ST HANG @ HOME LISTENiNG PARTY: FRiDAY RECAP!

Hang at Home with Chritian McBride

Thanks so much for joining us last Friday at our first JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Listening Party! Six-time GRAMMY award-winning bassist CHRISTIAN McBRIDE kicked off the very first Hang @ Home series, f rom his home in Montclair, New Jersey. Christian shared and riffed on some of his all-time favorite recordings of the late great pianist and composer, McCOY TYNER. Christian toured and recorded with McCOY TYNER many times over the years, and he had lots to share.

The first 100 slots filled up on ZOOM quickly and, with all the Facebook sharing and re-sharing going on, we reached 30,000 across the world including people from Columbia, Japan, Peru, Latvia, Ireland, Ecuador, Austria and the United Kingdom!

If you missed it, check it out here! (We’re worked through a few tech issues at the beginning. Hey, it was our first ever!)
