His Idols included trumpet giants such as Kenny Dorham\, Miles Davis\, Freddie Hubbard\, Woody Shaw and Lee Morgan. He started playing at age 10. \nWallace has shared the bandstand with legends such as Chick Corea\, Jimmy Heath\, Lenny White\, Buster Williams\, and the late Ornette Coleman–just to name a few. Wallace Jr.\, a graduate of the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of music\, continues to play in numerous venues and performance spaces across the U.S and internationally\, and remains a sought after trumpeter in the New Jersey/New York area. \nMusic has always been a part of the Roney family pedigree – his father being renowned trumpeter\, Wallace Roney Sr. as well has his mother being Universally acclaimed pianist\, Geri Allen.\n\nGet Tickets

Get your MONTCLAIR JAZZ FEST merch early!\n\n6:00 pm | JAZZ HOUSE Emerging Musician featured band6:45 pm | Opening band – TBA7:30 pm | Featured band: Winard Harper + Jeli Posse\n\nCover: FREE \n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n \nAbout Winard Harper + Jeli Posse:\nA talented drummer\, Winard Harper started his jazz career in the 1980s with Dexter Gordon\, Johnny Griffin\, and with Betty Carter for four years. While working with Carter he met Wycliffe Gordon\, with whom Harper would collaborate repeatedly.\n\nFrom 1988 to 1993 he worked with his brother\, trumpeter Philip Harper\, in the group The Harper Brothers\, alongside Justin Robinson\, Javon Jackson\, Walter Blanding\, Kiyoshi Kitagawa\, Stephen Scott\, Kevin Hays\, Michael Bowie\, and Nedra Wheeler.\n\nAfter the dissolution of the Harper brothers\, Winard recorded several albums as a leader. In the early 2000s he worked with his sextet and performed at Lincoln Center in New York City. He played with Avery Sharpe in 2008. He leads the group Jeli Posse.
