SUMMARY:JAZZ AT ONE: Steve Wilson / Rosnes / Washington Trio
DESCRIPTION:Join us for live jazz on your lunch hour! Trinity’s FREE lunchtime concert series\, Jazz at One\, takes at St. Paul’s Chapel in Lower Manhattan and features an eclectic mix of brilliant jazz artists in collaboration with JAZZ HOUSE KiDS. The program is also livestreamed on trinitywallstreet.org.\n\nFor our last program of the series we welcome the Wilson/Rosnes/Washington Trio. Featuring:\nSaxophonist Steve Wilson\nPianist Renee Rosnes\nBassist Peter Washington\nAbout Wilson/Rosnes/Washington Trio\nThis collaborative\, co-led trio first performed together at a two-night sold-out New York engagement which saxophonist Steve Wilson fondly recalls as “one of the best musical experiences I’ve ever had.” Their inaugural engagement was a musical banquet of riches for each member of the band. Wilson says\, “With the natural chemistry between us it was a profound experience that surpassed our expectations. The three of us have played together for many years\, but this was the first time as a trio. In this not-so-common drummer-less format we’re able to appreciate each others’ voices even more.” Their combined résumés include a who’s who of jazz history\, including such legendary names as Art Blakey\, JJ Johnson\, Chick Corea\, Wayne Shorter\, Joe Henderson\, Tommy Flanagan\, Dave Holland\, James Moody\, and George Duke. Now they’ve joined forces to make their own history. “Steve is such a lyrical musician. He plays with the spirit of an explorer\, always searching for new ways to approach the music\,” says pianist Renee Rosnes\, whose own playing has been described as an exquisite balance of delicacy and power with witty and weighted ideas. “Peter Washington is known for his sound\, consistency\, great groove\, and some of the most melodic bass lines of anyone playing\,” says Wilson. The trio’s performances are imbued with an unlimited sense of interplay\, and musical magic abounds.\n\n“expect chamber jazz of the most soulful sort.” Time Out NY\n“…attuned players who will flourish within so intimate an ensemble.” New Yorker\n\nJAZZ AT ONE\nSt. Paul’s Chapel • In-person\nFree; reservations not required\nAs part of Trinity Church Wall Street’s growing commitment to jazz\, a uniquely American art form and an important\, uniting voice for our collective story and experience\, Trinity Commons hosts a weekly lunchtime music series\, JAZZ AT ONE\,  coordinated by our very own TED CHUBB. \nJAZZ HOUSE KiDS offer students a wide range of creative programming with internationally renowned jazz performers teaching alongside staff. SUMMARY:JAZZ AT ONE: Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:Samara Joy\nSamara Joy is still relatively new to jazz. Growing up in the Bronx\, it was music of the past — the music of her parent’s childhoods\, as she put it — that she listened to most. Though she’s young\, she relishes the process of digging through the music’s history and learning new standards. In 2019\, she won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, and she’s since performed with legends like Christian McBride and Bill Charlap. \nSamara makes her case as the next mononymous jazz singing sensation with her upcoming Verve Records debut\, Linger Awhile. Her voice\, rich and velvety yet precociously refined\, has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King\, appearances on the TODAY Show and millions of likes on TikTok — cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star. \nOn Linger Awhile\, Samara is accompanied by esteemed veterans on Linger Awhile as well: her former professors\, guitarist Pasquale Grasso and drummer Kenny Washington\, form the core of the band\, which also includes bassist David Wong and pianist Ben Paterson. With ease and a preternatural assurance\, Samara swings right alongside them through understated yet powerful renditions of this creative collection of standards. \n \nJAZZ AT ONE Concert Series\nConcerts feature a lineup of talented artists each week\, exploring some of the most creative music in the jazz idiom.  Additional concerts are planned for the 2022-2023 season.  The concerts are free and open to the public. \n\nOctober 11: Loston Harris Trio\nOctober 18: Abraham Burton Quartet\nOctober 25: Sasha Berliner\nNovember 1: Coleman Hughes\nNovember 8: Samara Joy\nNovember 15: Theo Walentiny Trio\nNovember 22: Edmar Castañeda Quartet
