MEET Mauro Vásquez, jazz teacher in Peru

My name is Mauro Vásquez and I teach jazz at the Trener School in Lima, Peru. While many schools in Peru have strong music programs, jazz is not studied as extensively as in the U.S.  In 2015 and 2016, students and faculty from the JAZZ HOUSE traveled to Peru as part of a cultural exchange program supported by the U.S. Embassy and the Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano. We have partnered with JAZZ HOUSE KiDS ever since, and the collaboration allows all of us to share and learn about the sounds and rhythms of other cultures, a time-honored tradition in jazz. (Latin music has made especially rich contributions to jazz.)[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1574009346259{padding-top: 50px !important;}”]

From Lima, Peru to New Jersey

This August, I accompanied five of our middle school students to New Jersey to participate in the JAZZ HOUSE Summer Workshop. This was our second year bringing students and the experience went far beyond all of our expectations. For 15 days, we lived and breathed jazz with a busy daily schedule of ensembles, lessons and concerts with famous guest artists, an incredible visit to the Newport Jazz Festival, and on-stage performances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. On the bandstand, in the practice rooms and on weekend outings, the students connected with their like-minded peers from the U.S. and other countries. Jazz echoed what we had in common, building a whole new community of friends and colleagues that we’ll keep for life.  [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1574007758343{padding-right: 100px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”20079″ img_size=”full” alignment=”right” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1574007712580{padding-right: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 100px !important;padding-left: 100px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”20077″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1574007719630{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 100px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

The MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL

The MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL was one of the great highlights of the trip.  Our students had the opportunity to meet jazz legends Christian McBride, Eddie Palmieri and Joey DeFrancesco, among others. It was a very emotional experience and I could see and hear in my students’ performances how much their musicianship had improved. They learned to focus on their repertoire and became very committed to the music.

Jazz has no language barriers and has long been a powerful cultural connector that unites young people, fans, families and musicians.  We are thrilled to be ambassadors of this music with JAZZ HOUSE KiDS for the next generation of global citizens.  I am grateful that our students have made lifetime friends and are part of the JAZZ HOUSE community.

We hope you give generously to support their excellent work. Thank you to Melissa Walker and everyone at JAZZ HOUSE KiDS![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
