Each 90-minute in-person session will adhere to the highest safety protocols recommended by current CDC and State of New Jersey Department of Health guidelines, including:
- Student temperatures taken upon entering the building
- All students are required to wear face coverings and/or instrument face masks
- Smaller class sizes to allow for social distancing
- Frequent use of hand sanitizer recommended
- All students positioned six feet apart at a minimum
- Bell covers required + saxophone bags suggested
- Classrooms thoroughly sanitized between sessions
JOHN COLTRANE ENSEMBLE
Monday 4:00 – 5:45 PM | Beginner
Learn to jam on the modal vamps, groves, and blues of one of the most towering musicians of the 20th century, the great John Coltrane. Get to the essence of the music with learning his compositions and the freedom of expression they provide.
JOE HENDERSON ENSEMBLE
Monday 6:15 – 8:00 PM | Advanced
Not only was Joe Henderson unique as a saxophonist, his tunes were on the cutting edge of the 1960’s Blue Note Records post bop movement and shaped modern jazz for decades to come. Study the great compositions from seminal albums such as Inn N Out, Mode for Joe, and Inner Urge and learn the improvised language that is needed to play on them.
CHARLIE PARKER ENSEMBLE
Tuesday 4:00 – 5:45 PM | Intermediate
Charlie Parker is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega, and the primary architect of the bebop language. However, not only did his solos create the be-bop language, his tunes codified it into the american jazz lexicon. This musician’s music lends itself to a lifetime of study and we encourage you to start your journey with us!
ROY HARGROVE ENSEMBLE
Tuesday 6:15 – 8:00 PM | Intermediate to Advanced
Roy Hargrove synthesized a foundation in the bebop tradition and American songbook with funk and hip-hop to become the voice of a new generation. If you want to be a part of the future of jazz, Mr. Hargrove’s music is an essential repertoire to learn. This is a class that all up and coming jazz musicians should be in!
BROTHER JACK McDUFF ENSEMBLE

The sound of juke boxes in Harlem, Philadelphia, and Newark NJ were filled with B3 Organ records of Brother Jack McDuff. Learn the tunes and style that made the jazz world get out of their chairs and onto the dance floor.
WAYNE SHORTER ENSEMBLE

From his time with Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, to Miles Davis’ 2nd great Quintet, to Weather Report, and now beyond, few musicians have a canon of compositions that have charted the future of Jazz as Newark NJ’s own Wayne Shorter. Drawing from hard-bop, world music, blues, funk, rock, classical, and even movie soundtracks begin your path to exploring the amazing music of Wayne Shorter.
HERBIE HANCOCK ENSEMBLE

From Empyrean Isles, to the Headhunters, and Rockit, Herbie Hancock has been innovating through his composition, improvisation, and production, influencing the course of jazz and popular music in general for 60+ years. Tap into what makes his songs so special and gain a better understanding of his incredible grasp of his unique harmonic language.
Voices of Equality! – VOCAL ENSEMBLE
Thursday 6:15 – 7:30 PM | All levels
This class will focus on the powerful jazz voices of the civil rights movement such as Nina Simone, Oscar Brown Jr, Abbey Lincoln and Billy Holiday. These artists were essential in expressing their time and moving forward a variety of social justice causes and awareness. Learn to sing the anthems that provided the soundtrack to a movement. All who love to sing are welcome!

Log on, Listen, Learn + Play! Write your first tune! Produce! Get your repertoire together! Each class is designed to give students a jump in their musicianship on and off the bandstand. Classes open to students ages 12 to 18 from across the region and around the globe.

The church, one of the breeding grounds of jazz music and jazz musicians. No jazz artists showcased this better than these three. Come to this class to get your groove on and soul up! Get certified in soul by adding some Cannonball, Nat and Joe in your life!
THELONIOUS MONK ENSEMBLE
Tuesday 6:15 – 7:30 PM ET | Advanced
Many times referred to the High Priest of Bebop, within two notes you know if it’s a Thelonius Monk composition. Advance your harmonic, melodic and rhythmic depth by taking on Monk tunes that are unique and essential to being a jazz musician.
MILES DAVIS ENSEMBLE

The jazz icon of all jazz icon’s, Miles Davis is the quintessential musician, whose music spanned more than four decades. From bebop to hip-hop, you’ll be sure to learn and play music that is, and will continue to be, timeless.

The essential element to jazz music is improvisation! Let’s learn to do it in a safe and comfortable environment from your own home. From pentatonic scales to call and response to ear training to learning melodies, this class will get you prepared for playing solos at jam sessions, in ensembles.
