DESCRIPTION:About Melvis Santa\nGRAMMY nominee Melvis Santa is known for her multidisciplinary artistry. Vocalist\, composer\, actress\, and educator born and raised in Havana\, Cuba\, Melvis made a splash at 14 when she founded the all-female collective Sexto Sentido\, a project that jazz great Chucho Valdés deemed as “the best Cuban vocal quartet of the past 30 years.” In 2010 Melvis spread wings and became one of the lead vocalists of seminal Cuban Timba-Funk fusion band Interactivo\, led by Roberto Carcassés. Later she went solo and formed her own group. Her debut album as a bandleader\, Santa Habana (Bis Music) obtained a Cubadisco nomination in 2012.  \nCurrently based in New York\, Melvis continues to make a mark as an educator and performer. Her project Ashedí\, it’s a collaboration that features original compositions and traditional folk Afro Cuban styles\, including Rumba. DESCRIPTION:About INGRID JENSEN\nBorn in Vancouver and raised in Nanaimo\, B.C.\, Ingrid Jensen has been hailed as one of the most gifted trumpeters of her generation. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 1989\, Jensen moved to Europe to teach at the Bruckner Conservatory in Austria. She returned to New York three years later to embark on a full fledged career in jazz. She has recorded six CDs as a leader or co-leader and has been featured prominently on three Grammy-winning discs and numerous Juno winning albums as well\, including her own Juno award-winning CD\, Vernal Fields. One of Ingrid’s most frequent and closest collaborators is her sister\, the saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen. In addition to recent performances with the Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra\, in 2016\, the sisters released a brilliant quintet recording\, Infinitude (Whirlwind)\, which also features guitarist Ben Monder.\, bassist Fraser Hollins and the drummer Jon Wikan. A joint effort between Trinity and JAZZ HOUSE @ Trinity. \nMonty Alexander Trio\nNearly 60 years after he moved to the United States from Kingston\, Jamaica\, pianist Monty Alexander is an American classic\, touring the world relentlessly with various projects\, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. His spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making\, effervescent grooves\, sophisticated voicings\, a romantic spirit\, and a consistent predisposition\, as Alexander accurately states\, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm.” \nHe has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe and entertainment world: Frank Sinatra\, Tony Bennett\, Ray Brown\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Sonny Rollins\, Clark Terry\, Quincy Jones\, Ernest Ranglin\, Bobby McFerrin\, Sly Dunbar\, and Robbie Shakespeare\, among others. To date Alexander has recorded over 70 albums as a leader. \nAmong his many honors is the title of Commander in the Order of Distinction\, awarded to him by the government of Jamaica\, for outstanding services to Jamaica as a worldwide music ambassador. The Harlem Kingston Express is the culmination of years of searching for the formula that would allow him to keep both of his musical identities—American and Jamaican—intact and interacting live on stage in the same space.

Castañeda acts on the soundtrack and serves as music consultant on Disney’s latest feature Encanto. \nHe leads a trio with David Silliman on drums and Marshall Gilkes on trombone. He has also been a member of the Andrea Tierra Quartet with Andrea Tierra\, Sam Sadigursky\, and David Silliman. In 2006 he released his first solo album\, Cuarto de Colores. \nHe has performed with Paquito D’Rivera\, Simón Diaz\, Lila Downs\, Giovanni Hidalgo\, Joe Locke\, Wynton Marsalis\, John Patitucci\, Janis Siegel\, John Scofield\, Samuel Torres\, Hiromi Uehara\, and the United Nations Orchestra. \nNPR’s “Fresh Air” touts\, “…his technique is the real astonishment. SUMMARY:JAZZ AT ONE: Theo Walentiny Trio
DESCRIPTION:Theo Walentiny\nTheo Walentiny is a New Jersey born pianist\, composer and improviser. He is an alumnus of Jazz House Kids\, NJPAC Jazz for Teens\, The Banff International Jazz Workshop and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. While at The New School he has been fortunate enough to study with Reggie Workman\, Jane Ira Bloom and Kirk Nurock among many others. It is here that Walentiny began to forge and solidify his sound drawing upon influences such as Andrew Hill\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Tōru Takemitsu and Henri Dutilleux. \nHe released his debut album “Looking Glass” (as a leader) on April 2\, 2021. This album is a collection of solo piano improvisations recorded in the fall of 2019. \nHe is a founding member of the Aurelia Trio alongside bassist Nick Dunston and drummer Connor Parks. The group has been named Aurelia due to their sound being closely associated with the lucid-dreamlike appearance and movement of the Aurelia jellyfish. Rooted in jazz\, Aurelia Trio’s musical language bears several other influences\, particularly contemporary classical music and free improvisation. \nIn addition to Aurelia\, Walentiny leads a septet which also features Jasper Dutz\, Adam O’Farrill\, Kalia Vandever\, Lee Meadvin\, Nick Dunston and Connor Parks. The septet’s repertoire features his own compositions exclusively and ranges in influence from impressionism and romanticism to modern jazz while sometimes cross collaborating with visual artists. In 2019\, she won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, and she’s since performed with legends like Christian McBride and Bill Charlap. \nSamara makes her case as the next mononymous jazz singing sensation with her upcoming Verve Records debut\, Linger Awhile. Her voice\, rich and velvety yet precociously refined\, has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King\, appearances on the TODAY Show and millions of likes on TikTok — cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star. \nOn Linger Awhile\, Samara is accompanied by esteemed veterans on Linger Awhile as well: her former professors\, guitarist Pasquale Grasso and drummer Kenny Washington\, form the core of the band\, which also includes bassist David Wong and pianist Ben Paterson. He has written titles on legendary recordings — A Love Supreme by John Coltrane\, and Kind of Blue by Miles Davis — and on a record label: The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records; and co-wrote Carlos Santana’s autobiography The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story To Light. His most recent book\, George Harrison on George Harrison: Interviews and Encounters was published in August 2020. He teaches at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music. \nVincent Pelote\nVincent Pelote\, Senior Archivist and Digital Preservation Strategist\, holds a B.A. in Music Education and a M.L.S. from Rutgers. He has published several discographies\, including one on Lionel Hampton in the vibraphonist’s autobiography. He is active in the Music Library Association and in the Association of Recorded Sound Collections\, where he has served as President. \nElizabeth Surles\nElizabeth Surles\, Archivist\, holds an M.A. in Musicology and an M.S. in Library and Information Science with a Certificate in Special Collections from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Previously she worked at the American Alpine Club Library first as Digitization Archivist and then Library Director. DESCRIPTION:Sasha Berliner\nSasha Berliner is a musician\, composer\, producer\, and band leader from San Francisco\, CA. A rock drummer turned vibraphonist\, Sasha was first introduced to the instrument through her high school Oakland School for the Arts as part of the jazz program. \nHer debut jazz album\, “Azalea” (2019)\, was subsequently nominated for JazzTimes 2019 Readers’ Poll’s “Best New Release” and has been described as “shimmering and thoughtful” (Kassel\, TIDAL)\, “gleefully exploring various genres and headspaces” (Tremblay\, CTEBCM). The record takes on a trans-genre\, politically charged\, jazz-alternative sound\, employing digital effects\, synths\, audio speech samples\, and strings in the soundscape\, a product of her diverse musical background and influences melded in to one. \nSasha was named the 2020 Downbeat Critics’ Poll winner of the “Rising Star – Vibraphone” category. She was both the first woman\, and at 21\, was the youngest individual in the poll’s history to be granted the win. She was voted in the top ten vibraphonists for the 2021 and 2022 Downbeat Reader’s Polls\, sharing a list with vibraphonists such as Joe Locke\, Stefon Harris\, and Joel Ross. A joint effort between Trinity and JAZZ HOUSE @ Trinity. \nDave Holland Trio featuring Kevin Eubanks and Eric Harland\nDave Holland\nDave Holland is a renowned bassist\, composer and bandleader whose passion for musical expression of all styles and dedication to creating innovative ensembles have propelled a career of more than 50 years. A guiding light on acoustic and electric bass\, Holland has earned top honors including multiple Grammy Awards and Grammy Nominations and the title of NEA Jazz Master. Holland rose to prominence in groundbreaking groups led by such legends as Miles Davis\, Stan Getz\, Sam Rivers\, Betty Carter and Anthony Braxton and Joe Henderson—as well as collaborations with Chick Corea\, Gary Burton\, Jack DeJohnette and John Abercrombie. Today he is equally celebrated for his own remarkable ensembles\, ranging from duos and trios to big bands\, featuring innovative collaborators like Steve Coleman\, Robin and Kevin Eubanks\, Jason Moran\, Chris Potter and Eric Harland. Holland’s most recent release\, Another Land is a trio featuring Kevin Eubanks and Obed Calvaire. \nKevin Eubanks\nKevin Eubanks is a prolific guitarist and composer. He is well known as the former Music Director of The Tonight Show band\, appearing on the show 18 years (1992 – 2010). As one of the most accomplished guitarists in history\, Kevin’s laidback style and affability seems to belie the concentration and focus that have made him successful both as a consummate musician and a household name for late-night TV viewers. Kevin has worked with some of the greats of Jazz\, including Art Blakey\, Slide Hampton\, McCoy Tyner\, Sam Rivers\, Roy Haynes\, Dave Holland\, Ron Carter and others. In 1995\, Kevin joined The Tonight Show Band featuring Jay Leno. His versatility and open -minded approach enabled him to write and choose music that satisfied the huge and varied audience for the show. The position afforded Kevin the opportunity to work with great and popular musicians from all genres. He loves to do volunteer work for charities and maintains an active relationship with the organization dearest to his heart\, The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. \nEric Harland\nEric Harland is a multi-Grammy nominated\, and the most “In demand drummer” of his generation. He has already been on close to 500 recordings and multiple film scores at his age of 45.
