Education Fund Chair:
WHAT IS [INSIDE] THE JAZZ NOTE?
A genuine jazz summit, our Annual [Inside] the Jazz Note Education Fund Benefit is the culmination of the Jazz House Kids year, and our very different rendition of an annual gala.
Arranged and orchestrated by our artistic chair, multiple GRAMMY-winning bassist Christian McBride, this 2-day action-packed program embodies our mission: A full-day masterclass packed with music, mentoring, apprenticeship and education; and an exhilarating evening event of music + conversation.
During the masterclass, high school band and choral students from across New Jersey, along with their teachers, come to the Montclair State University campus for a series of workshops and one-on-one clinics with Christian, Jazz House teaching artists, and that year’s guest artists, giants of jazz themselves. In past years, we’ve had kids learning from the likes of Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Chris Botti, Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, and Jimmy Heath.
The next evening, the doors at MSU’s Kasser Theater swing open to the public, and jazz lovers get their chance to listen to and learn from these iconic artists as they perform live with our students and converse with Christian. The lively give-and-take is a highlight of the program.

Music, mentoring, and education happen simultaneously during the daylong Inside the Jazz Note masterclasses. Students from high schools across the state come to Montclair State University—for many, it’s an invaluable first visit to a college campus—and attend a workshops, one-on-one clinics, and masterclasses with Christian McBride, Jazz House faculty, and the day’s special guests. At the end of the day, young players watch the professionals and the Jazz House Big Band as they rehearse for the next evening’s gig.
CONCERT AND CONVERSATION

Our evening event is “Inside the Jazz Note Education Fund Benefit,” an entertaining and enlightening event that is open to the public. Our celebrity guests jam with the Jazz House Big Band—the apprenticeship piece of our mission—and converse informally with host Christian McBride. We’ve heard how ambient noises can jumpstart Pat Metheny’s compositions…why Esperanza Spalding—the only jazz musician to ever win a GRAMMY for Best New Artist—chose to play bass…who Chick Corea believes holds the future of jazz (our students)…where Dianne Reeves launched her career. Both the music and the conversation are always big-hearted, spontaneous, joyful and inspiring.
