Our award-winning Jazz House big band program, under the direction of Julius Tolentino, features three full big bands, two of which are open by audition only and represent Jazz House Kids at prestigious competitions and festivals. All bands focus on classic big band repertoire and modern jazz standards. Big band members develop a broader sense of the history of jazz and are exposed to the crucial fundamentals of music – blending in a section, projection, doubling, phrasing, reading and working with featured guest artists – that come with performing in a large ensemble.
This specialty ensemble focuses on section playing, technique and intonation using the specialized and highly regarded Jazz saxophone choir repertoire.
The members of this ensemble will be introduced to the exciting world of big band and explore its rich history. Students will develop the fundamentals of music and jazz in a large ensemble setting.
Members of this ensemble will explore the music of Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and other grand masters of jazz, while learning to solo and swing in a section.
Our most advanced large ensemble performs regularly, and competes (and wins) on the national stage. Our award-winning performance and touring Big Band attracts advanced musicians from the tri-state area!
