03 Sep On The Sunny Side Of The Street: Volume 16
FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER
Dear friends and families,
Welcome to On the Sunny Side of the Street!
This is our e-newsletter where we take a look at what we’ve been doing to help our community stay connected, creative and swinging with jazz!
This week we turned the calendar page to September — that’s almost six months since we brought all our classes online. We have had a great time working with close to 450 students since March and have spent nearly 700+ hours in daily classes, workshops and weekly masterclasses. We thank everyone involved for making it such a rich experience!
This fall, all our families are grappling with new school schedules, hybrid models, and remote learning as they try to balance with parent work situations and family dynamics. We know none of this is easy. Like many of your own schools, JAZZ HOUSE KiDS will start our fall programming online. We have designed a new trimester schedule that takes advantage of the online learning platform. We are excited by the new classes that continue our commitment to providing world-class music training that advances students both on and off the band stand.
Registration for our 2020-2021 Youth Program is now open! Ensemble classes, electives, weekly masterclasses, in-person jam sessions, special CHiCA Power and college workshops — we’ve been working hard to create innovative and enhanced online experiences for all our students. This summer we received high marks from our summer attendees for making the online learning experience super engaging and fun.
A big thank you to our arts education team, Markus Gottschlich, Ted Chubb, Daniela Gonzalez and Galo Inga as well as our our tremendous teaching faculty, for keeping our students engaged and growing! Check it all out on our website here. I am excited to see how much we can do together this year!
Stay safe, welcome to September (!) and keep your mask up!
PS — Were you one of the 65,000 people we reached with the BEST of the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL? On August 21-23, nine hours and nine of our favorite full sets from the archives were live-streamed to our social media platforms and presented on SiriusXM Jazz Radio. We hope you had a chance to tune in, and you can watch them here any time.
And there’s more MONTCLAIR JAZZ FEST coming your way! Save the date for live MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL combo performances at Montclair Center’s Pop Goes the Plaza on September 12 and September 26.

GOOD LUCK to our JAZZ HOUSE Class of 2020!
As we start a new school year, we can’t help but reflect upon our students who have gone on to a new stages in their lives in completely uncertain times. Whether they have chosen to go off to in-person college, remote learning, are taking a gap year or seeking employment, we wish them the best at rising up to all the joys and challenges. (And there WILL be joys!) Where ever their paths lead them, they will always being part of the JAZZ HOUSE KiDS family.
JOHN F. KENNEDY SCHOOL
Since 2009, JAZZ HOUSE KiDS has worked with JFK, an ungraded, special education school in Newark. Assisting the resident music teacher and therapist, we augment the music program with a vocal choir and instrumental program using the Pascal Norge method. Several of our students who we’ve been working with for many years graduated this June, and we were thrilled to take part in their ceremony. Our grateful thanks goes out to The Silver Family Foundation for their long-time support of this program. Everyone has a song in their heart!
Congratulations to all our 2020 JAZZ HOUSE KiDS graduates!
Keep on swinging!
MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL
Live music…while safely social distancing! The MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL is thrilled to partner with the Montclair Center Business Improvement District (BID) to bring music to the streets. Presented by Lincoln of Wayne, the small group performances will take place in downtown Montclair’s vibrant merchant and restaurant corridor at the intersection of South Park and Church Streets.
Pop goes the Plaza!, a new initiative of the Montclair Center BID, helps local residents and regional visitors from neighboring towns rediscover their own backyard on summer and early fall Saturdays. The busy business thoroughfare is closed to traffic as Church Street transforms with colorful modular benches, shade canopies and a vibrant street design. Small business retailers pop up in the middle of Park Street. Stop by, enjoy the nice weather while we can and stay a while for these great community events (and don’t forget your masks!)

“Music enhances the education of our children by helping them to make connections and broadening the depth with which they think and feel. If we are to hope for a society of culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our children’s education.”
