FROM THE [home desk] OF OUR PRESiDENT & FOUNDER

Dear friends and families,

Founder & President Melissa WalkerWelcome to On the Sunny Side of the Street!

We hope this finds you well, and getting outdoors to enjoy the warm weather and explosion of color in yards and parks. On the Sunny Side of the Street is where we take a look at what we’ve been doing to help our community stay connected, creative and uplifted.

Tonight, Christian and I are back in our hosting chairs for our Hang @ Home Listening Party, this time continuing with Part IV of our series “The Singer and the Song.” Our special guests JAZZMEIA HORN, CYRILLE AIMEE, and vocal faculty member DYLAN PRAMUK will share stories and riff about their favorite voices in jazz — what songs shaped their careers and who continues to inspire them on and off the bandstand.

Last week we had a powerful listening party on FREEDOM MUSIC, and explored its rich tapestry and history. Thank you to our special guests, TERRY LYNE CARRINGTON, GARY BARTZ and VIJAY IYER. This was the first conversation in a multi-part series exploring this important topic.

For next week’s Hang @ Home Listening Party, Christian and I welcome three talented composers, BILLY CHILDS, HELEN SUNG and OSCAR PEREZ for a topic we are calling, “Settling the Score,” to discuss the songs, compositions and works that have inspired their unique and individual voices. Don’t miss it!

Playing Through the Changes – We Thank You!

Good news! Thanks to 51 individual and corporate donors lending a hand, we met our Herb Alpert Foundation challenge grant. We are also thrilled to announce that JAZZ HOUSE KiDS has been awarded a CARES ACT grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The JAZZ HOUSE is one of only 17 nonprofit art organizations in the State of New Jersey to be awarded this grant…we are most grateful.

“Arts and culture are a key component of the U.S. economy that contribute $877.8 billion, or 4.5 percent, to the nation’s gross domestic product in 2017 and employ over 5 million wage-and-salary workers who collectively earned $405 billion. This funding will help support those jobs and those nonprofit organizations during this time of great need so that arts and culture will persevere as a significant contributor to the American economy.” NEA Press Release

We are humbled by the 268 people that contributed to the ongoing JAZZ HOUSE KiDS Relief Fund.

100% of funds raised will support our music education and performance programs, keeping our students engaged, our faculty working, and ensuring we can continue to serve as a source of learning, connection, and inspiration. Every gift no matter how small, helps this organization play through the changes. We are greatly appreciative to you for helping us continue to serve as an instrument for change and share the spirit of jazz.

Stay safe, and let’s do our part by wearing our masks and social distancing to help us all keep healthy.
Straight ahead….

…AND WE’RE OFF! JAZZ IN JULY

2020 Jazz in July Summer ProgramWelcome to the JAZZ HOUSE Summer Experience!

This week, we kicked off our new online summer intensive experience, JAZZ in JULY, and welcomed more than 80 students from across the globe:

  • Eight states — New Mexico, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Louisiana, Minnesota, Texas, and New Jersey
  • Seven countries — the Dominican Republic, United Kingdom, Brazil, Malawi, Mexico, Latvia, and Australia
  • four continents!

We kick off each morning with our “Jazz & Eggs” session, then students and faculty break into individualized schedules — technique sessions for brass, saxophone, drums, piano, guitar, and voice; improv; film scoring; composition; production + recording; and virtual bands.

Every day at noon, all students and faculty come together again for a special masterclass or concert. On Tuesday, our own 6-time GRAMMY Award-winning bassist, CHRISTIAN McBRIDE led a masterclass with NEA Jazz Master, piano legend KENNY BARRON. The two jazz masters talked about about Barron’s illustrious career as a leader and sideman, then opened it up for questions and comments from students.
