Composition Conversations Masterclass with HELEN SUNG

One of the major lessons pianist/composer Helen Sung learned as a Monk Institute jazz student under bass legend Ron Carter was: “if you want to develop your own voice, you need to write your own music.” So every other week, when Mr. Carter held his classes, she and her fellow students had to have a new composition ready, which they played and then received his critique. For this upcoming JAZZ HOUSE KiDS session, Helen shares her lessons from that important experience, examining concepts in composition learned from her favorite jazz artists as well as the close ties between composition and improvisation.
