Jazz House Kids will host its annual Summer Workshop, August 3-15, 2015. Held for the first time on the campus of Montclair State University, students receive invaluable mentoring and top-notch instruction throughout the two-week program. The camp welcomes students at all levels ages 8 to 18. Limited housing is available.

Highlights of the workshop include special student performances at jazz clubs across the region –Dizzy’s Club Coca- Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City and Hat City Kitchen in Orange and Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair.

The Jazz House Summer Workshop culminates on Saturday, August 15 as every student performs in large ensembles and vocal groups for thousands of music fans at the Montclair Jazz Festival.
Adding to the 20+ core faculty and teaching assistants, students participate in master classes with internationally renowned guest artists. Past special guests have included camp artistic chair and bassist Christian McBride; Wallace Roney; Clarence Penn; Anat Cohen; Clifton Anderson; Ron Blake; Regina Carter; Oliver Lake; Steve Wilson; Russell Malone; Stefon Harris; Maurice Chestnut; Myron Walden and more. Being mentored by this caliber of professional musicians can be a game changer for young people just starting out on their instruments, allowing them to dream big.

Last year, students attended a workshop on scoring for film and television led by Christian McBride, Oscar Perez and filmmaker John Werner. The camp also hosted a session on the music business with guests from ASCAP, TD Bank and the Jazz Standard. Apprenticeship is central to the Jazz House and our students will need these “real world” skills as they move through life.

Families have an essential piece of the action too. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings cheer their favorite emerging musicians performing at jazz clubs. The Jazz House Parent Action Committee organizes a potluck dinner for students and staff on the last night of the workshop. Following the family potluck, students spend the night at a giant sleepover preparing for their performances at Dizzy’s, Hat City Kitchen and Trumpets. Perhaps the most thrilling part of the two weeks is to see these talented young musicians grow stronger individually and forge lasting friendships.
